Members of SCERIN (2024)

The South, Central and Eastern European Regional Information Network (SCERIN) is one of the regional networks of GOFC-GOLD (Global Observation of Forest and Land-use Dynamics).  SCERIN contributes to GOFC-GOLD and has strong linkages with the Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI), as well as the North Eurasia’s Future Initiative (NEFI) under the auspices of Future Earth, which are programs of internationally supported Earth System Science research.

SCERIN focuses on the Danube watershed and western Black sea coast, which include the territories of Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Moldova, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine, and other neighboring countries. SCERIN is an informal network of scientists and other professionals based or with scientific interests in the region of South Eastern and Central Europe, which strives to ensure continuity and collaboration between the scientists, professionals and existing RS networks in the region.

The thematic focus of SCERIN includes LCLUC and implications to climate & society; forest function, disturbances, fires; ecosystem carbon storage and flux dynamics; water and ecosystems management. Some of the critical regional issues include changes in forest composition, age, function and structure; changes in ecological diversity; increasing urbanization; and increased frequency of extreme events (i.e., floods, droughts and fires), due to unbalanced water regime.

The goals of SCERIN are, to (including but not limited to)

  • Provide a platform for collaboration among remote sensing experts in the regions, through collaborative activities
  • Facilitate consistent implementation and progress of remote sensing and LCLUC methodology in the region
  • Foster regional collaboration for monitoring the dynamics, stability and vulnerability of the major land covers and ecosystems
  • Promote effective monitoring for sustainable management and preservation, on the local, regional and pan-European level

“The members of the network are organized and their work is facilitated by the following focus groups (FG):”

The work of SCERIN is facilitated by the following focus groups (FG):

FG1: Forest monitoring – forest management, forest health and function, forest disturbances and biomass [Leads: M. Nita/ J. Albrechtová/ I. Sachkov]
FG2: Land use changes – agricultural abandonment, urban expansion [Leads: G. Taff/ L. Kupková/ P. Stych]
FG3: Validation/verification network [Leads: L. Filchev/ I. Manakos/ A. Halabuk/ P. Campbell]
FG4: Water management and LC impacts (river watersheds, catchments, dams, Leads: V. Starodubtsev/ I. Pilas / V. Lagutov]
